PLANTING PLANNER
Start with a plan. Grow something lasting.
Estimate your plants, choose your season and prepare a useful planting brief.
How many plants?
Choose a common length or area for a quick planning estimate. The right density depends on your species, design and any approved planting specification.
Hedge planting calculator
Count plants across the whole hedge, not separately for each row. Six plants per metre is an example; use the density in your planting plan.
Estimate woodland tree numbers
Exclude paths, open ground and other unplanted areas first. This assumes a regular square grid and rounds up to whole trees. It does not set a woodland grant specification.
Working with a different measurement?
Hedge plants = hedge length in metres × plants per metre. Woodland trees ≈ net planted hectares × 10,000 ÷ (row spacing × spacing within the row, in metres). Round up to a whole plant.
Send Will your exact dimensions and planting plan for a project quotation.
Cell-grown planting calendar
Our main cell-grown tree and hedge planting window is September to May. Use summer to plan the next project and look after plants already in the ground.
September–November: discuss your planting brief, check site readiness and start planting when conditions are suitable.
December–February: planting continues where ground and weather allow.
March–May: spring planting, with moisture and aftercare planned as conditions warm.
June–August: plan and prepare for autumn; check newly planted areas and discuss watering and aftercare needs.
Weather, soil moisture, site access and plant readiness decide the actual planting date. Frozen, waterlogged or very dry ground can require postponement. Work outside the main window is assessed for the individual site.
